'Bomba Day': second Coordination Committee in the Prefecture to define measures for safe defusing and controlled explosion of the bomb

 

The second Coordination Committee was held this afternoon in the Prefecture of Venice. On the agenda were the protection measures in readiness for "Bomba Day" on Sunday, 2nd February, following the discovery of a 500-pound World War II airplane bomb in Via Ferraris in Marghera.

All the authorities concerned with the operation were called and coordinated by the Prefect Vittorio Zappalorto: Central Police Station, Municipality of Venice, Local Police and Civil Protection, Border Guard, Railroad Police, Guardia di Finanza, Carabinieri, 8° Regiment of Sapper Paratroopers, Group of Scuba-Divers and Commandoes, Harbour Master’s Office, Fire Brigade, Urgent Care and Medical Emergency Service, Italian Navy, Interregional Office of Public Works, Trenitalia, RFI, Grandi Stazioni, Port System Authority, Veneto Region, Ente Zona Industriale, Italian Civil Aviation Authority, Enav, Anas, Veneto Strade, Confindustria, Save, Customs Agency, Venetian Hoteliers Association, ConfCommercio.

Evacuation of residents

In order to carry out the operations, it will be necessary to evacuate residents within a radius of 1816 metres from the location where the bomb was found (about 3,500 people, attached is a list of the affected addresses). From 6 a.m. law enforcement agencies and the Civil Protection Agency will be involved in the evacuation, information and assistance of residents.

From 6.00 a.m. to 7.00 a.m. a free shuttle service has been provided by Actv to reach the Palasport Taliercio, identified as a meeting point and hospitality area. The shuttle bus, leaving every 5 minutes, will pass through Viale San Marco, via the following stops: Sansovino, Molmenti, Boerio, Forte Marghera to Taliercio. 

Throughout the entire evacuation period, a specific anti-looting service will be actived by law enforcement agencies. 

From today the Civil Protection Agency volunteers have started door-to-door information activity to properly alert citizens, businesses, hospitality structures and other enterprises.

Traffic closed 

  • From 7 a.m. private vehicles and pedestrians will be forbidden to circulate in the safety area. The "Ponte della Libertà" Bridge will be off-limits.
  • From 7.30 a.m. use of public transport on road and rail will also be forbidden.
  • Actv/Avm bus lines will undergo timetable changes and interruptions (see attachments).
  • Actv navigation (water) lines will be subject to timetable changes and interruptions (see attachments)
  • The People Mover service will remain active to/from Tronchetto

Railway service

  • The last train scheduled to depart from Venezia Santa Lucia to Mestre is at 7.10 a.m. 
  • The last train scheduled to depart from Mestre to Venezia Santa Lucia is scheduled at 7.10 a.m. 
  • The trains scheduled to depart from Venezia Santa Lucia during the defusing phases will depart from Mestre station (see attachment).

Air traffic

  • Interruption of flights arriving and departing from Marco Polo Airport in Tessera from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.
